What are the supported file types?
The basic file type you can use for your photo gifts is following: .jpg
JPEG (can be .jpg or .jpeg)- JPEG's support over 16 million colors, but can "distort" the image to compress the file size. The amount distortion is directly related to the 'quality' setting the image is saved with. We also recommend that you use the least amount of jpeg compression possible. (This is a setting on cameras that is sometimes called "quality" or "compression".) While high resolution and low compression will increase transfer times, they will produce the best results.
Can I use Black and White images?
YES! In fact, black and white images can give your photo gifts a "timeless" feel that will give them a special feeling to you many years from now.
Feel free to use black and white images, sepia ("old-fashioned") images, or even just designs your kids have drawn using Paint or some other computer-graphics program.
What does "dpi" mean?
When a computer displays a digital image, what it does is take the data in the file and display thousands of tiny dots on your screen. The more dots an image has, the more detailed the picture can be. Image quality is measured by dots per inch, or "dpi".
For best results, we recommend that your digital pictures be at least 200 dpi when printed on the Photo Gift.
Why? 75 dpi is usually acceptable when an image is viewed on a computer screen. However, unless you have a very expensive, high-quality monitor, there's a good chance that your screen doesn't display much more than 75 pixels in an inch. When you see an image in person, you expect it to be clearer. For the most part, we expect images to be at least 100 dpi when we see them in person, or we notice that edges appear a little fuzzy. Professional photography quality is usually around 300 dpi or higher! Here's an example of two images that look similar when viewed on a screen, but look very different when seen at printed image size:
1000x800 |
640x480 |

When printed as an 8x10, here's what they'll look like (only part of the image is shown): |

Do I need to leave a blank border around the edge of the circle on the 8.5" x 11" (digart) template?
You generally don’t need to leave a blank border around the edge of the circle. However, consider leaving space around the border if there are any critical text or elements that you want to ensure don’t get cut off during printing or trimming. This way, you can maintain the integrity of your design.
What happens if the names are cut off on the products?
When you scan the drawings make sure that any names are within the solid line after you drag the image to the template online. We cannot guarantee the name will not get cut off if you go outside the dotted line.
Will colors on products match the artwork exactly?
No, not all the time. But we try to get as close as possible
Why should the artist sign their artwork?
When you have the child’s name on the artwork, it’s easier to pass out the plates to the students.
Why can’t I use glitter?
Glitter will not show up on the digital process.
Why can’t all the items in the product collection have colored backgrounds?
Some items just have a small circle in the middle of the template and we give you an option to fill around the circle with a background color.

If it's been more than 90 days, we will not able to replace the plate.
If an image is submitted of a broken plate that has been pieced together and shows the cracks, that's how the new printed plate will look when produced. We are not able to offer art repair or art touch-ups.
Why do the bright colors in my artwork look washed-out on the product?
If you use bright florescent colors including highlighters and some Crayola brand markers, your artwork may look washed-out. These type of markers and colors do not scan well. The scanner does not recognize the bright colors and is not able to replicate them well.
What Crayola brand markers can I use?
We recommend the standard 8-12 color packs of Broad Line Markers-Classic Colors, Fine Line Markers-Classic Colors or Washable Super Tips Markers. If you use more than a 12 color pack to create your artwork and then scan it, some colors may produce unwanted results.
Why can't I use my phone camera to take a picture of my traditional circle template and upload it?
The artwork taken with a phone camera is usually skewed or may have an odd shape. The artwork may even have lighting issues and heavy shadowing that cannot be corrected in the art review process. Additionally, there is also an issue with taking a picture of hand and foot artwork. If the photo does not include the edge of the Tradition Circle Template, there is no way of knowing what the original size of the hand and foot artwork is to be able to review the artwork accurately.
Why is there a white border around my Hand and foot artwork on my 10 inch plate?
All artwork uploaded is set to auto expand to the size of the printable image area of a product. The Digart Template uploaded is 7.9 inches, roughly 8in and the plate is 10 inches, that leaves about a 2in difference. Each Digart Template uploaded gets reviewed manually. When reviewing hand and foot artwork, the reviewer will return the uploaded artwork back to the original Digart Template size to 7.9 inches, this is what causes the white border. If this is not done during the review process, the Hand and foot artwork will be enlarged by roughly 20%.
Will the wrinkles in my scanned artwork show on my product?
Yes, it will print as seen on your scan. We have an art review process that removes the Digart Template line and fixes some basic scan flaws, but the artwork is not manipulated in anyway. We do not fix customers artwork.

Why does my plate look dull or matte finish?
The finish of the product is part of the molding process that may vary from mold to mold. A mold may have a semi-gloss, smooth or matte finish. It all depends on the span of the production run of the mold.
Can I use florescent or highlighter colors to create my artwork?
We do not recommend using florescent or highlighter markers. They do not scan well and they tend to look dark and muted when printed.
Can I use light, bright colors to create my artwork?
Light, bright colors do not scan well. They tend to scan and print as dark, muted colors, or sometimes they don’t scan at all.
Can I use pastel colors to create my artwork?
Yes, you can use pastels, but we don’t recommend it because pastel colors do not scan well if they are too light.
Why are there wrinkles & creases on my product?
Wrinkles and creases on products are a common occurrence. Some wrinkles are more visible than others because of color saturation. Dark colors tend to show more flaws than lighter colors. Wrinkles happen because of the two part process of taking a flat printed layer and applying it to a partially molded plastic resin layer and molding it into a one completely molded curved finished piece.
What is the difference between the Traditional Circle Template and the Digart Template?
The Tradition Circle Template is actual paper that is cut into 10 1/2 inch circles. The template gets drawn on and then mailed in to be molded into a plate.
The Digart Template is 8 1/2 x 11 inch sheet of paper that has instruction and some option to choose from on it and that can be downloaded & printed. The template is scanned by the customer and then uploaded or can be mailed in and scanned by Makit, then it's reviewed, printed and molded into a plate
Why were the hands and feet artwork enlarged on my 10 inch plate?
All artwork uploaded is set to auto expand to the size of the printable image area of a product. The Digart Template uploaded is 7.9 inches, roughly 8 inches and the plate is 10 inches. Each Digart Template uploaded gets reviewed manually. When reviewing hand and foot artwork, the reviewer will return the uploaded artwork back to the original Digart Template size to 7.9 inches, if this gets overlooked during the art reviewing process, the Hand and foot artwork will be enlarged by roughly 20%.
What are scan lines?
Scan lines are lines that usually run vertical continuously down the scanned artwork and they are caused by some sort of debris on the plated glass strip. The scan lines can increase and will not clear until the platen glass strip is cleaned.
Why does my scanned artwork have scan lines?
The scan lines are caused by some sort of debris/spec found on the platen glass strip, not scanner glass bed. They may increase and will not go away until you clean the platen glass strip and re-scan.
What file formats does Makit support?
JPG at 300dpi.
How do I save my artwork to a JPG format?
The setting is usually in your scanning software under OUTPUT, FORMAT or SAVE AS
