What began in 1943 as entertainment for Reverend Wilbert Awdry’s ill son, Christopher, has turned into a brilliant example of educational entertainment for three generations of children. In 1945, Rev. Awdry published his first story, “The Three Railway Engines” featuring Edward, Gordon and Henry, character you might recognize from the PBS series Thomas and Friends. The following year, “Thomas the Tank Engine” was published, his character based on a handmade wooden toy that Rev. Awdry gave his son for Christmas. Until 1972, Rev. Awdry published 26 different steam engine stories. Afterwards, his son, Christopher, took over and published 14 more.
Thomas and Friends made its American television debut in 1989 and has been imparting tales of realistic relationships and conflict resolutions ever since. Inviting children into a world of imagination on the Island of Sodor, Thomas and Friends encounters common events with which all children can identify, such as joking with friends, arguing with adversaries, or engaging in healthy competitions, and in the end, Thomas and Friends demonstrates the importance of having good manners, respect for others, and being useful.

2. Have some fun at home of office coloring in the provided templates with the included markers

Note: each Thomas Make-A-Plate® kit comes with 6 unique Thomas templates, markers, return envelope, instructions and one pre-paid certificate to have one 10 inch round melamine plate made. First, “start your engines” and join Thomas, the overachiever and lead tank engine of his own branch line. Following Thomas’ lead of being eager to please is Thomas’ friend Percy, one of the junior engines. Percy is always “super busy.” The older engines, as you may recall from Rev. Awdry’s first story, are Edward, Gordon and Henry. Edward is good-natured and called upon to restore order when the other engines get out of line. Gordon is the oldest yet fastest and strongest of all the steam engines. Gordon is always happy to help the younger engines when they get into trouble. Last is Henry, prone to illness because of his age but always available to lend a hand. On of the island’s favorite characters that you won’t find on the track is Harold the Helicopter. He is beloved by all of his engine friends.
